Sun's fiscal third quarter of 2008 reported a net loss of $34 million on a GAAP basis translating into a $.04 per share drop as compared with net income of $67 million, or $0.07 per share during last year's third quarter. Sun did report that the net loss included charges related to the acquisition of MySQL and the company would have had earnings of breakeven per share without this buy.
New developer tools and expanded professional service capabilities were introduced this week for Sun's open storage platform. The tools are comprised of videos and accompanying online how-to guides to assist developers in building storage systems quickly and efficiently. And, to help customers speed open storage application development and make the transition to an open storage infrastructure, Sun's Open Storage services portfolio was highlighted.
As promised, Sun released the Solaris 9 Containers software at the end of April and its download is now available. This offering enables a simpler migration of Solaris 9 applications to the latest systems running the Solaris 10 Operating System (Solaris OS). This solution is intended for those customers who want to run their Solaris 9 environments on newer Chip Multi-threading (CMT) systems running Solaris 10 8/07 or later releases.
The Uptime Institute has included Sun Microsystems among the honorees in its 2008 Green Enterprise IT Awards citing Sun's "strategy for improving the efficiency of its technical infrastructure portfolio," which resulted in the development of the Sun Microsystems Modular Datacenter S20 (also known as Project Blackbox), among other innovations.
Sun Fellow Mike Splain has officially been named as executive vice president of the Microelectronics Group. Splain, who has been heading the group since the departure of David Yen earlier this year, will continue leading all aspects of the Microelectronics technology development and business operations.
The Storage Networking Industry Association's (SNIA) newest Board of Directors member is Sun's own Eric Bart, currently senior director of storage management software at Sun. The SNIA Board of Directors oversees the not-for-profit's vision and mission, addressing issues such as strategic planning, membership development, marketing and public relations, technical output and operational planning.
