The OpenSolaris COMSTAR project is one of Sun's leading Open Storage initiatives. It separates and abstracts back-end storage however access is allowed. Through COMSTAR's SMTF users can allocate some raw disk and then provide it to SAN through an FC Target, iSCSI Target or SAS Target etc. Users can now, with 100 percent open source software, turn a white-box PC with a bunch of SATA disks and a Fibre Channel HBA into what appears to a SAN to be an enterprise grade Fibre Channel array.

Prize-Winning Contest Entries and 6 teams of Grant-Winning Students Teams

The OpenSolaris Community Innovation Awards Program was designed to fuel innovation around OpenSolaris. The program included both a contest and a student grant component and was part of Sun's Open Source Community Innovation Awards Program, a multi-year program running across several open source communities with a $1 Million total prize.

"Solaris has always been the 'gold standard' for other operating systems to emulate, and Sun took the Free and Open Source Software (F/OSS) movement by storm by publishing Solaris' source code," said Grand Prize winner Al Hopper of Genunix.Org. "The OpenSolaris project is now more than three years old, has a healthy and growing user community and continues to gain mindshare. In the future, the launch of OpenSolaris will be seen as a major landmark in the history of computing and will be viewed as a significant precursor to the runaway success of the F/OSS revolution."

Sun has released the OpenSolaris distribution which is a brand new way of distributing Solaris using a live CD with even more software available on network repositories.

A self-directed, one-day, self-paced, OpenSolaris training course by Roman Strobl is now available.

During this training participants will learn how to get started with OpenSolaris and get a good understanding of its benefits. It also offers a unique hands-on experience with many of the advanced technologies which come with OpenSolaris.

An OpenSolaris ARC (architecture board) proposal to support booting Solaris from iSCSI has been approved as PSARC/2008/427. The problem was that Solaris was unable to be boot-off from iSCSI disk. This is a drawback which limits Solaris' competency in iSCSI SAN enviroment, diskless clients.
